SPECIFICATIONS
This section describes the project objectives and requirements. Please
refer to the Rules section for information on how to enter the competition,
and the Guidelines section for details on the theme of the competition.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND REQUIREMENTS
The aim of the competition is to design the ideal garden shed, one
that will stand out through its high-quality architecture, its original
functions and uses and its pertinent relationship with its natural
or built surroundings.
The competition is intended
as a multidisciplinary exploration of the architecture of garden
sheds, but also of their significance, utility and uses in people's
lives and in relation to their environment.
This is more than an exercise
in style, it is also an effort to grasp the meaning of the relationship
of garden sheds with their landscape, their symbolism, their creators'
imaginations, their connection with the garden, their shape, material
and uses. After all, a shed may be a gardener's (or smoker's) refuge,
a storage place for tools, a secret storehouse, a children's hiding
place, an artist's studio, an observatory and much more.
Competitors may seek further
food for thought in the Guidelines
section.
DISPLAY CONTEXT
The garden sheds selected will be part of a travelling exhibition.
They will be displayed in a wide variety of settings: from the tranquil
natural landscapes of Reford Gardens to the compact surroundings
of the Monopoli architectural exhibition gallery and the vibrant
energy of urban environments in Montreal.
Although it is not a requirement,
designers may wish to take into consideration that the sheds will
be displayed in a row, and relatively close together.
SIZE REQUIREMENTS
The size requirements are
the same as those for THE IDEAL HUT SHOW, presented in GLASGOW in
1999, and are illustrated in the attached axonometric
projection.
Designers are not required to use the entire volume or to build
all surfaces. However, they may not exceed the stated dimensions.
PRODUCTION CONTEXT
The sheds will be constructed
by craftspeople skilled in the production of art installations.
Designers must pay particular attention to the production budget
(CDN$2,500) and the 30-day production period.
These factors will be decisive
for the jury and the technical committee. The technical committee
will submit its recommendations on the technical, economic and temporal
feasibility of the proposals to the jury for use in its deliberations.
